Rooster

They called him “Rooster.” Mac and the other prisoners didn’t know his full name, his service affiliation, or his rank. It appeared the rigors and terror of war had had a devastating effect on him. He was in another world. The guards thought he was crazy and left him alone. He’d stand on the trunk of a tree that had just been felled by a POWs ax. He’d strut up and down the tree trunk, flapping his arms, and crow like a chicken. The guards thought he was funny and would give him a cigarette or two after one of his struts. Mac and the others couldn’t help laughing, watching the crazy guy go through his routine. When the prisoners dallied too long during Rooster’s performance, guards would crack a few heads to get them back to work. Rooster never let up. At night he could be heard crowing and cackling like a chicken at the other end of the barracks. No one knew whether he was crazy or whether it was an act, and they would never know. Rooster was shipped out of Palawan to Manila. No one knew what happened to him, but maybe he wasn’t so crazy after all.
